Lagos in color

Actualizado: 8 jun 2023

I had the great chance to explore the vibrant African art at the renowned Nike Art Centre in Lagos. Located in Lekki, it stands as the largest art hub in West Africa, housing an extensive collection of over 8,000 African artworks. The centre showcases the artistic essence of Lagos and Nigeria through captivating paintings, sculptures, and ancient pieces.

Founded in 1983 by Nike Davies Okundaye, the art gallery is a testament to her resilience and passion. With no government support, Nike relied on her own modest earnings to establish the gallery. She herself is an inspiring figure and can often be found at the gallery, adding a personal touch to the experience.

Nike's story is truly inspiring. At just 13 years old, she escaped a forced marriage arranged by her father. Drawing on her grandmother's artistic teachings, Nike devoted herself to creating adire costumes for her husband's band. After 15 years of an unhappy marriage, she established her own adire business, embracing the rich traditions of the Yoruba culture. The US government recognized her talent and invited her to share her craft, allowing her to employ and train women from disadvantaged backgrounds. To date, she has empowered over 3,000 Nigerian girls and taught more than 150 students in Europe and America. Nike's unwavering dedication led her to establish the largest art gallery in West Africa, inspiring and Painting of Nike Davies Okundaye

uplifting women facing similar challenges.

Captivated by the paintings portraying girls and women’s stories, I couldn't resist purchasing "African Power Girls: Inspired, Empowered, Fortified" by Adebola Williams. Motivated by the lack of African female heroes in literature, he who wrote this book specifically for his goddaughters, presenting captivating stories of women who defied odds, broke barriers, and challenged oppression.

This inspiring read transcends boundaries, offering insights into the challenges faced by girls and instilling resilience for future generations.
