Lagos, a city of warm hearts and friendly souls, welcomed me with open arms. Even before I arrived, the amazing BCG team in Lagos went above and beyond to help me find a comfortable place to stay and arrange a reliable driver for my daily commute to work. They promised to be like family, and they truly were!
Yet, navigating Lagos as a solo female traveler proved challenging. My first few hours in Lagos were far from easy. Upon landing at Murtala Muhammed Airport, I quickly realized that the airport wasn't welcoming to visitors—drivers were not allowed to pick us up from inside, and there was no Wi-Fi available.
Alone amidst the bustling airport, I found myself waiting for my luggage, grappling with the decision of venturing outside to find a driver I didn't know. Thankfully, a kind stranger offered to make the call for me, and I asked the driver to wait at the entrance. He agreed.
Just as I was ready to leave the airport, two officials took me to a private room for a thorough check of my belongings, searching for any items that required declaration. They asked me personal questions, wondering why I was traveling alone without a boyfriend. To make matters worse, one of the officers held my hand tightly for several minutes, making inappropriate comments and asking my opinion about his own appearance. With no one else nearby and no means to call for assistance, those minutes felt like an eternity and posed the greatest risk I had ever faced.
Thankfully, a security officer arrived, not exactly to help, but I seized the opportunity to find my way out.
